Abstract: Planning is inherent to language teaching. We plan units, lessons, activities and projects, to mention but a few. In our zest to find creative activities and cater for our students’ needs, we run the risk of overlooking some crucial principles in education and ELT. How can we ensure that our planning does justice to the latest research and to the underlying principles in the curriculum? How can we plan having valued student outcomes in mind? This presentation aims at reflecting on these questions so that participants can find their own paths to their young students’ learning.

Abstracts

Something real, something meaningful: Authenticity of materials and purpose with teenage learners

More often than not, teenagers complain that the textbook or other resources are artificial, dumb, or unreal when compared to everyday language-mediated practices. In this workshop, we will discuss, explore, and design activities which are based on authentic sources of input and purpose. Our explorations will follow Richard Pinner’s (2016) conceptualisation of authenticity as a continuum.

Lemme hear ya: Authentic listening

Listening is vital for foreign language learning, and yet, we don’t seem to focus so much on it didactically speaking. In this workshop, we will revisit different notions of authenticity and discuss how they relate to authentic listening for English language learning. We will explore authentic listening through activities which can help learners develop strategies for understanding.
